| Milton's Journey with Project Permanence |
|
Milton was constantly having outbursts in his home. These outbursts entailed physical altercations with his siblings and becoming destructive of personal property. Milton was diagnosed with ADHD and showed symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorders. He often refused to take his medication and would only take his medication when the police were called during extreme situations. The youth and his adoptive parents were referred to Project Permanence after Milton's mother called the CFS Post Adoption Program, with a request for assistance in managing her son's behaviors. Milton made strides to transition to a public school from a non-public school setting, but had problems making friends. He had difficulties reading social cues and would be constantly teased because of poor hygiene. Through the help of Project Permanence, Milton's grooming has greatly improved and is now making friends. He currently has a girlfriend and was recently nominated Homecoming King at his school. In addition, he has offers from 180+ colleges, offering scholarships for his athletic ability. Milton is currently taking his medication on a daily basis and feels his relationship with his peers and family has improved. Milton was also given the resources to help with his independent living skills and with graduating at the expected date. Project Permanence has also assisted the family with improving the communication in the home through aide of communication workshops. Project Permanence lead meetings with the family to facilitate discussion about current challenges in the home and address concerns as a family unit. This allowed for demonstration of appropriate means of problem-solving and conflict resolution. Through these meetings a safety plan was formed which significantly decreased the calls to the police and increased Milton's use of positive coping skills. Project Permanence staff were also able to assist in connecting the family with local resources to meet basic needs in the home. |
