Helping Open Pathways to Education (HOPE) Contra Costa

Lincoln Child Center's HOPE Program provides school-based early intervention and prevention mental health services to children, youth, and families in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. Our goal is to help students develop the tools necessary to be successful in their neighborhood schools. By bringing services to the schools, where children and youth spend a majority of their day, we are creating resource hubs that strengthen the entire community.

The HOPE team provides supports at the schools at all levels. We support administrators with initiatives that improve school-wide culture, facilitate counseling groups that address common issues faced by the students, and provide more intensive services to students whose emotional and behavioral needs are creating obstacles to their success at school. In this way, we help schools incorporate a Response To Intervention (RTI) model, which integrates a multi-level prevention system to maximize student achievement, and reduce behavior problems.

For those students who are referred for more comprehensive supports, we develop an individualized plan that is driven by the input we receive from the student, family, and school staff. The HOPE team can provide an array of services, depending on the particular strengths and needs of the student, including:

  • In-class Support
  • Playground Support
  • Group Therapy
  • Individual Therapy
  • Family Therapy
  • Teacher Consultation
  • Incentive Plans
  • Crisis Intervention
  • Therapeutic Summer Programming
  • Community Outings

When students can remain at their schools and receive the supports that they need within their community, they are more likely to be successful academically, have better peer and family relationships, and feel better about themselves. Lincoln Child Center's HOPE Program has more than a decade of experience partnering with schools and families to achieve that goal. Recent analysis of Lincoln's HOPE Program highlights that we are effectively providing support to students, caregivers, and teachers, fostering student emotional growth, improving each student's relationship with their schools, and positively impacting the overall school culture. Here are a few things they had to say about HOPE:

"The HOPE Program helps students to get coping tools to navigate the school environment and to deal with their own problems from home." —Elementary School Teacher

"The program has been helpful to my child because it shows my son how to react and sit down and express his emotions...express himself. Just don't go ahead and get angry and irritated. Just sit down and calm down and see how his feelings are." —HOPE Parent

"I want to come to school now and do more sports. It also helps me with my grades and behavior." —HOPE Student

HOPE is funded by Medi-Cal through Contra Costa County, by donations from individuals, foundations, and corporations and through contributions from schools. The services are free for participating families.
